The True Heart of the Everglades starts from the little country town of Boreen Point. As you head north from Boreen Point, the water is predominantly freshwater all year round.
Are there everglades closer to Noosa?
No — and it’s important to know the difference. Some companies operating around Lake Weyba and Noosa Sound, market their experiences as “Everglades tours,” but this is misleading. These areas are part of the lower Noosa River system and consist entirely of saltwater habitats. They are not part of the Noosa Everglades.
The true Noosa Everglades begin at Lake Cootharaba, about 20 minutes north of Noosa Heads. From there, the river transitions into a rare and pristine freshwater ecosystem that winds through the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park — one of only two everglade systems in the world.
If you want to experience the real Everglades, make sure you’re starting from Lake Cootharaba.
