What to Expect

Wilderness Camping in One of Australia’s Most Unique Natural Landscapes

Hidden deep within the Cooloola Recreation Area lies one of Queensland’s most unforgettable outdoor experiences — camping in the Noosa Everglades.

This is not polished resort camping.
This is real wilderness.

Towering paperbark forests. Mirror-like waterways reflecting the sky. The sound of wind moving through the trees. Mist rising from the river at sunrise. Campfires under endless stars.

Depending on where you choose to camp, you may go hours — or even days — without seeing another person. It’s just you, nature, and one of the most pristine ecosystems in Australia.

The Noosa Everglades form part of the internationally recognised Noosa Biosphere Reserve and are one of only two everglade systems on Earth. Stretching through ancient wetlands, tea-tree forests, and tannin-stained waterways, this region offers a rare opportunity to disconnect completely from modern life and reconnect with the outdoors.

Getting to the Noosa Everglades Campsites

Part of the magic of Everglades camping is the journey itself. Many campsites are only accessible by water or rugged bush tracks, creating a genuine sense of remoteness and adventure.

❋ Access by Kayak or Canoe

For the ultimate wilderness experience, many adventurers choose to paddle into camp. Launching from Boreen Point or Elanda Point, you can journey through calm waterways surrounded by dense wetlands and towering melaleucas before arriving at secluded camping areas only accessible by paddle craft.

Travelling by kayak allows you to experience the Everglades at its purest pace — slow, silent, and immersive. Early mornings often bring glassy reflections across the water, with birdlife echoing through the trees and kangaroos grazing along the shoreline.

Popular paddle-access camping areas include:

  • Fig Tree Point

  • Harry’s Hut

  • Upper Noosa River campsites

❋ Access by Boat

Small boats and tinnies can also access many areas of the Everglades and Upper Noosa River. Boating offers a more relaxed option for carrying camping equipment while still allowing access to secluded wilderness campsites far from the crowds.

As you move further north along the river, the environment becomes quieter, wilder, and increasingly untouched.

❋ Access by 4WD – Harry’s Hut

For those travelling by vehicle, Harry’s Hut can be reached via approximately 45 minutes of dirt 4WD track driving through the Cooloola Recreation Area. The journey itself feels like stepping back in time, winding through forest, sandy sections, and remote bushland before arriving beside the Upper Noosa River.

The road conditions vary depending on weather and recent rain, and a suitable high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended.

Harry’s Hut serves as a popular access point for:

  • Camping

  • Canoeing and kayaking

  • Fishing

  • Hiking

  • Exploring the Upper Noosa River system

Despite being one of the more accessible areas, it still maintains a wonderfully remote wilderness feel.

Reconnect with your body and mind as you escape the noise of everyday life.
